IT'S ALL ABOUT THE LIPS

A look that I see quite often on the runway is a bold lip paired with an understated eye. Sometimes that understated eye means no product at all and sometimes it means a light wash of colour, but most importantly it means forgoing mascara. I love that kind of look because it's not about big, sexy, fluttery eyelashes and it's not about feeling conventionally pretty. There's just something interesting about it.

I went for a dark and brooding rendition today, probably an account of the dark and brooding weather outside. As it's all about the lips I thought I'd give them a multidimensional look. I used Wet'n'Wild's Cherry Bomb all over my lips first. Then on the outer corner of the lips I applied a combination of a darker colour (from the MAQ Pro Palette) and a black liner and blended in towards the middle. To add a final bit of dimension I added a touch of Nars Dragon Girl right in the center of my lips and blended out. I figure you've got put the time in layering and blending when you're going for an ombre look.

I decided to go for a bit of colour on the eyes to add some intensity. I used a combination of the two matte brown shades from the Sleek Storm Palette (which was very happy to see the light of day once more) and added a wash over my lids and quite low under my eyes. As for the rest of my skin I tried to keep in looking fairly polished. Bold colours on the lips tend to emphasize any redness or blemishes you may have so it's worth spending a little one on one time with your concealer. Finally, I finished with a bit contouring and highlighting, courtesy of the Sleek Contour Kit in Light. What do you guys think? Do the naked eyes freak you out or do you think that there's something there?

  1. Hi Holly! I think the eyes look very deep set and smouldering and not naked, besides this look is very Lisbeth (Girl with the dragon Tattoo), even though she didn't wear lipstick but if she did it would be this! .. which is sexy! :-)
    Great job!

  2. It's so crazy, but you almost look like a completely different person! I love this look, and the multidimensional effect you did with your lips…though I likely would just keep it a solid red for everyday wear, I find it very interesting for editorial purposes. Another fantastic look Holly! xx

  3. This is such a gorgeous look - I love your tip about not wearing mascara with a bold lip colour, as I think it makes all the difference here. I'll have to try it out!

  6. This is such a beautiful shade. I've been obsessed with these kinds of colours, even though it's summer where I live. I just can't kick how in love with this vibe I am!

  11. Love this look! I was actually at an event at the Swedish beauty brand "Make Up Store" the other day and the spring collection looks very much like you've done it when it comes to lips - darker edges to add dimension and then lighter as you go in ( but very discrete!). Its like a grunge-chic look and it looks amazing on you !

  12. I love this, it's very opposite-of-basic. (Do people even use that word? Have I been watching too much Buzzfeed?)

  14. I love this look, and the idea of going without mascara - something I rarely do since mine are blond, but a look I'm intrigued by, for sure.

  15. Ah I still need to watch that! Everyone says it's so good.

  16. I do enjoy a good bit of "un-everyday makeup." Yeah I kind of thought that about myself too - looking like a different person. Maybe because I usually try to avoid anything that might make my eyes look deeper set.

  17. Thanks Tessa. It is definitely a different look. But different is how I roll.. sometimes.

  22. Yeah I went pretty dark and freaky. I don't know that I'd wear this out and about either. But it's fun just for playing around.

  25. I've always thought it looked really cool to have neked blonde lashes and a strong lip, but I get why you wouldn't want to wear that everyday.

  30. I love wearing the bold lips / nude eyes combo but have never thought of skipping mascara. It makes sense though. I will try it next time. I love the gradient you created with the darker MAC lipstick. It looks beautiful.

  32. The makeup trend for next year is just like in the photos above! I went to the Burberry spring collection sneak peak a couple of months ago and minimal eye makeup paired with bright lips seemed to be the way to go ... and Holly; you are rockin' that look!! I love experimenting with looks from the runway ( that I wouldn't sometimes wear outside the privacy of my own home) but it's just so much more creative isn't it? :D
